No strangers to the midsize crossover segment, but now more modern than years prior, the 2016 Nissan Murano vs 2016 Toyota Highlander is a frequent match-up you’ll see played out. One of the greatest distinguishing differences between the two is passenger capacity. The 2016 Toyota Highlander adds a third row which the 2016 Nissan Murano opts not to provide; instead, it makes the case for more passenger space and flexible cargo room.
Either crossover SUV is going to be an excellent choice as a family vehicle; they each have earned the title as a 2016 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, but the Murano also secures the empty-nester niche. It doesn’t bear a luxury badge, but it does create a higher quality interior that takes everyone’s level of comfort into account.

Rear passengers not only will have more than enough personal space, but they also are able to enjoy heated seats, their own rear climate control system, and a USB connection port. The optional panoramic moonroof also isn’t just for the benefit of front seat passengers as it extends above the heads of those in back as well.

2016 Nissan Murano: Midsize Crossovers Have Met Their Match
As a more upscale crossover, it competes neck-in-neck in terms of price with the Toyota Highlander. Each vehicle lists plenty of versions to choose from rather than boxing drivers in and forcing bundled packages on them. In addition to an impressive amount of space and features, the Nissan Murano does an exceptional job of blending power and efficiency. The Murano is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine that creates 260 horsepower and is available either as a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle.
This is the engine carried across the majority of the 2016 trim lineup, although there now is a Murano Hybrid version that was recently introduced. The SL Hybrid and Platinum Hybrid are able to produce 249 HP, showing off a 2.5L 4-cylinder SuperCharged engine and electric motor.
The 2016 Toyota Highlander isn’t as efficient as the 2016 Nissan Murano, while both are able to tow the same maximum weight of 1,500 lbs. Neither is a massive SUV designed to tow and haul; for those of you who are looking for a larger people-hauler with truck-like capability, you may want to look into the Nissan Pathfinder or Armada.
