This year was the first time that Nissan ever offered a hybrid version of the Nissan Rogue, and it’s safe to say that it has been quite a success. In fact, the new Nissan Rogue Hybrid has been named a finalist by Green Car Journal magazine for “2017 Green SUV of the Year award.” The winner of this award won’t be announced until next year at the Washington Auto Show on January 26th, 2017.
Although the Nissan Rogue is the second best-selling vehicle within the brand, the Hybrid version is new to the family and not yet as popular or available at this time; nonetheless, the accomplishment of the 2017 Nissan Rogue Hybrid as a “Green SUV of the Year” finalist is worth discussing!
Nissan Rogue vs Rogue Hybrid Fuel Efficiency
The number one expectation of a hybrid vehicle is to be more efficient than a normal, gas-fueled vehicle. The standard Nissan Rogue already is an efficiency leader within its class, earing 26 city/ 33 hwy mpg. The Nissan Rogue is offered in three trim levels, S, SV, and SL all of which come equipped with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission.
As for the Rogue Hybrid, which will be powered a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that is paired with a compact lithium-ion battery “with an innovative one-motor, two-clutch control” system, it will be able to earn 33 city/ 35 hwy mpg. Burning far less fuel than its standard counterpart, the Rogue Hybrid will be more expensive outright, but over time, will be the more cost-effective option.
Nissan Efforts To Go Green
Since the death of the Altima hybrid, there hasn’t been another hybrid version of any North American Nissan models except for the Murano which was released right around the same time as the Rogue. When it comes to going green, the all-electric Nissan Leaf continues to pave the way not only for the brand but all affordable electric cars.

Automakers are continuously striving to make more efficient vehicles to, first and foremost, impact the environment in a positive way but to also help drivers save time and money without constantly having to gas up. Companies are still exploring and pursuing hybrid power, striving to make it better and more affordable.
Currently, there is a race for automotive companies to go entirely electric and produce self-driving vehicles, but until that year arrives, hybrids continue to be an exceptional improvement.
