When fuel prices are low, we don’t think quite as much about gas costs as we do during the blazing heat of summer, especially because many of us don’t like to drive as often in winter. Still, your car should be a well-rounded vehicle that’s just as much a pleasure to own when life is hectic and fuel ups frequent. If you’ve been considering the 2018 Nissan Altima, you’re probably wondering what the fuel economy is like. We look at what you can expect based on the various trim levels.
2018 Nissan Altima EPA estimates
Fuel efficiency numbers are always based on EPA tests in the U.S. Naturally, you wouldn’t trust manufacturer numbers as they would likely represent ideal conditions. The EPA, on the other hand, tries to base these figures on average driving. You might drive slower or faster, in heavier traffic or rougher conditions. Many factors can impact your actual efficiency. That said, here’s what you can expect.
The 2018 Nissan Altima comes in a total of six trims, the S, SR, SR Special Edition, SV, SL and 3.5 SL. The first five trims all have the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 179 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Despite this, fuel economy figures vary just slightly because a different assortment of features impact the weight of different trims.
The S, SV and SL all receive an EPA-estimated 27 city and 38 highway mpg rating
The SR and SR Special Edition have a one mpg drop at 26 city and 37 highway mpg.

This leaves just the 3.5-liter V6-powered SL trim. The robust engine provides a whopping 270 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque, but the extra power does create some small sacrifice in fuel efficiency. The top trim option receives an EPA-estimated 22 city and 32 highway mpg rating.
