Road trips. They can be the best or the worst of times depending on where you’re heading, what you’ve brought along, and who you’re traveling with. Maybe you already have, but hopefully there are 7 clever road trip and driving hacks you haven’t thought of that we’ve listed below.
Some of the ideas below you may already be a part of your usual game plan, but we’re hoping that you’re able to take something new away after reading!
- Skeleton plan: Not everything goes according to plan; that’s one thing we know about life. Make a plan but let the rest fall into place. Plan out which cities you plan to stop in or sleep overnight in, but realize that traffic, construction, and weather can mess with your timing.
- Do your homework, but don’t work too far ahead: Of course it’s important to plan and research your tip, but over-planning and over-researching can turn things sour. Expectations aren’t reached and sometimes it’s better to allow for a little surprise.
- While you’re there…: Even if you’re just cruising through a city or only spending the night, it doesn’t hurt to hop on good ol’ Google and see if there is anything worth seeing. Maybe there is a famous restaurant or a landmark that is at least worth posing in front of.
- Gas car: If you frequently travel, whether it’s just for fun or for work, eventually you’re going to be racking up a lot of miles. Turn those miles into points which can be used for free fuel, lodging, or food in the future.
- Save your spare change: When passing through certain states, it’s easy to forget that some have tollways and require odd amounts of money. ($1.80). There are even some that strictly require change, so it’s always a good idea to have a mixture of coins and bills on hand.
- Don’t go off the grid: One of greatest joys of going on vacation is not being glued to your phone or email, but at the same time, when you do plan on spending the night in different city, always send a text and let a close friend or relative know where you are. This way there is documentation of where you are just in case something should happen.
- Local grub: Websites like Trip Advisor are great for advice on places to eat or stay, but sometimes asking a local will help you avoid crummy parts of town and discover the best hole-in-the-wall food joints.
