Nissan’s Snug Kids Initiative Makes Installing Your Child’s Car Seat Easier Than Ever

Installing car seats can sometimes be a tricky obstacle to overcome. Making sure a car seat fits and is secure is important to any parent. With Nissan’s Snug Kids child safety guide, learning how to install your car seat into your new Nissan has never been easier.
What Is The Snug Kids System?
Created in 2002, Nissan’s Snug Kids resource is an industry-first initiative for the safety of children in child restraint systems (CRS) or car seats. Since not all car seats fit properly into all vehicles, Nissan came up with a solution to make sure every car seat is snug and secure.
Bob Yakushi, director of product safety at Nissan North America, said, “Nissan is committed to passenger safety – including the safety of children, our most precious cargo.”
“We began Snug Kids to aid caretakers in the purchase and installation of child restraint systems, and fully support NHTS’s (National Household Travel Survey) direction,” Yakushi said.
Outside of Nissan’s sports cars, all cars, minivans, SUVs and trucks feature Snug Kids guides to aid in the installation and selection of child safety seats. You can find printable guides through Nissan here.
What Are Some Tips to Help Me With Installation?
With children 1-year-old or younger, you should always secure them in a rear-facing CRS. However, if stabilization of the car seat is becoming an issue, simple fixes such as a rolled up towel or even a pool noodle can be placed under the seat for a more secure fit.
If possible, have a second person help install the car seat. One person would then be able to push the CRS down into the seat while the second person can pull the seat belt tight enough to the car seat.
Once installation of the car seat is complete, you can check by pushing side-to-side on the restraint where the seat belt routing is located. You should be looking for the seat to be moving an inch or less to ensure it is safely secure.
With car seat installation, however, there are always a few common mistakes that can be made. One of easiest mistakes to make is using the wrong harness slots. For rear-facing seats, you’ll want to use the slots located below your child’s shoulders, whereas you’ll want to use the slots at or above your child’s shoulder with forward-facing seats. Here are some more common mistakes to avoid.
