Should I use synthetic oil in my Nissan?
By Product Expert | Posted in FAQs, Service & Sales on Friday, June 16th, 2017 at 5:33 pmIs synthetic or regular oil better for Nissan?
Maybe it’s because summer is here and we’re all driving our cars more, but we’ve been getting many more questions than usual regarding the use of synthetic vs regular oil in Nissan models. You’re likely wondering which is better, because everyone knows that maintenance is the key to longevity. It’s not an entirely easy question simply because Nissan recommends different options depending on the year and make of your model, but we’ll try to be as clear as we can.
Using synthetic oil in Nissan models
These days many Nissan models, such as the 2017 Nissan Rogue, do recommend the use of synthetic engine oil. This is important to keep in mind when you go for an oil change because there can be some confusion about whether you’ve been using conventional or synthetic oil in the first place, and if you believe you are switching you might think that means you can go ahead and extend your time between maintenance.
Many synthetic oils claim to last anywhere up to 15,000 miles, but Nissan only stands behind the claims and recommendations that you’ll find in your owner’s manual. It’s also important to keep in mind that specific viscosity and recommendations will differ for older vehicles and different models, but each owner’s manual is specific and easy to find online.

Is synthetic oil better?
Opinions can differ on whether synthetic is better, but we stand behind Nissan’s recommendations. Modern synthetics can take longer to break down, which is why you’ll see most vehicles listed with oil change intervals at 5,000 miles, rather than the conventional 3,000 mile mark.
Why does synthetic oil have a better reputation than regular, mineral-based oil? Essentially, it has been scientifically engineered without all the impurities that are found in nature. Your oil is used to lubricate your engine, and it’s easy for dirt and grime to build up. A dirty engine is a poor performing one. Synthetic oils help protect your engine, keep your fuel economy at its best and help prevent damage from extreme weather.
