Does the Nissan Maxima take premium fuel?

You just finished ripping around the neighborhood showing off your brand new Nissan Maxima. Raced a few tuned-up sports cars from a red light and gunned it on the highway to see just how fast those horses can really run. All that joy riding eats up your fuel after a while and now it’s finally time to gas ‘er up, but does the Nissan Maxima take premium fuel or is regular gas just fine for it?

According to the 2016 Nissan Maxima owner’s manual, Nissan recommends the use of unleaded premium gas. The octane rating should be at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index). If for some reason you cannot use premium fuel or it is unavailable to you, then unleaded regular gasoline can be used so long as the octane rating is no less than 87 AKI.

Will you notice a difference between using premium and regular fuel? Not drastically, but there may be a slight decrease in performance. Compared to being powered by premium fuel, it might not giddy-up and go as quickly as usual, but will any actual damage be done to the engine? No, so long as the regular fuel that you are using is 87 AKI or above.

How do you know the octane rating of gas at pumps?

If you’re worried about putting the right type of fuel in your vehicle, it will always be posted on the pump on a bright yellow sticker. The majority of all gas stations will offer regular fuel that has a octane level of 87. This is the recommended level for nearly all standard vehicles.

High end luxury vehicles, sports cars, and other performance-based vehicles are the main culprits who require premium fuel for better performance and to reduce the risk of any gunk and junk building up and doing damage to your engine.
