Electric vehicles aren’t particularly known for being powerful and sporty. With less than 100 horses, their primary objective is to be as fuel efficient as possible. The Nissan Leaf has absolutely been thriving in the green game for quite some time now, ranked as the best-selling electric vehicle on the market. In fact, just recently the next-generation Leaf has confirmed that it will be getting a brand new battery that will enable it to travel up to 200 miles.

Nissan has been making excellent ground in the electric vehicle race, but a glimpse into the future brings fantasy to reality. Pictured above is the Nissan BladeGlider, not to be confused with Blade Runner.
The high-performance electric Nissan BladeGlider debuts in Rio as one of Nissan’s more futuristic and inventive prototypes. The vehicle combines two things that nearly every driver can appreciate: zero-emissions and high performance.
Nissan BladeGlider Origin
How was this futuristic sports car conjured up and what efforts went into making it a possibility? Three years ago at the Tokyo Auto Show in 2013, Nissan first showed off the idea but now in Brazil it has arrived to demonstrate what Nissan is planning for the future. High performance sports cars that typically are gas guzzlers are looking at a zero emission future that could make a huge impact on the market and welfare of the environment.
The BladeGlider is a symbol of Nissan’s commitment to further developing fully electric vehicles in the coming future. The nearly silent performance of the BladeGlider is what gives it its name as its electric powertrain and aerodynamic build allow it to slip right by unnoticed if not for its eye-catching design.

Nissan BladeGlider Design Details
The revolutionary sports car design of the BladeRunner seats two passengers side-by-side behind the driver in a triangular position. The narrow front that opens up to a wider back end helps with balance and stability when handling the vehicle. The open roof (a concept that Nissan often plays with) is meant to make the vehicle look like an “open-topped race car but with the safety of a coupe.”
Innovation doesn’t come up shy when it comes to technology; the interior feels like something from a sci-fi movie.
- Wheel-mounted controls provide information for an advanced display screen that shows: speed, battery charge, regeneration mode and a torque map.
- In addition to a central screen, there are two screens with “images of rear-view cameras mounted just behind the front wheels.” (This is instead of door-mounted mirrors.)
- Powered by a 100% electric battery, the BladeGlider can reach beyond 120 mph and achieve 0-60 mph in less than five seconds
