Nissan designs Faraday Cage for smartphones

We live in a constantly connected world. So much so that many employers find themselves blocking social media sites just to ensure employees aren’t distracted. If you shouldn’t be updating your status at work, you shouldn’t be updating it while you drive. You also shouldn’t be texting friends or family, even if it’s just to say you’ll be right there. Distracted driving has become a top cause for automotive accidents in recent years. We just can’t seem to help ourselves. So Nissan is stepping up with the Nissan Juke Signal Shield Prototype, which acts as a Faraday Cage to block cellphone signals.
What is the Nissan Juke Signal Shield?
Right now the Signal Shield is a prototype, but essentially it’s a compartment in your arm rest that completely blocks signals. This means you won’t get calls, texts, connection to WiFi or Bluetooth. Naturally, this might seem inconvenient if you use your phone to listen to music or podcasts, but if you simply find it distracting and want all the notifications to stop, the Signal Shield will kill all temptation.

What if you want connectivity, without distraction? Wired connections are still available, and presumably will have access to the box so you can connect and then block signals.
It isn’t clear right now whether Nissan will be unveiling this feature on new models, as the automaker revealed the prototype to its UK customer base, and didn’t indicate a release date. In the UK market, those caught texting and driving have increased penalties when caught. It seems people all over the world can’t help themselves when they see or hear a notification, even when they have the best intentions.
Is the Nissan Signal Shield a necessary feature for today’s drivers, or would it work just as well if you simply turned your phone to silent and put it in the glovebox? Share your thoughts with a comment below, and be sure to check back here at the Glendale Nissan Blog for more news.
