When it comes to racing games, Gran Turismo has long been a top seller for its ability to put you in the digital driver’s seat of your favorite sports cars. But what if it wasn’t digital? Nissan recently hooked up a Nissan GT-R to a PS4 controller for a remote experience in honor of the release of Gran Turismo Sport. Of course, they only put the controller in the hands of an experience gamer. After all, the 2017 Nissan GT-R has a starting MSRP of $109,990. Not exactly a model they want to put through the impressive crashes many of us are capable of. Hand-eye coordination takes work.

The new Gran Turismo Sport game will be released on Oct. 17 here in the U.S., so why not have fun ahead of it? Hooked up to an official DualShock 4 controller, the GT-R/C four robots that control the brakes, throttle, transmission and steering, plus six computers to monitor it.

Tested by Jann Mardenborough, a Nismo athlete and GT academy winner, the GT-R/C averaged 76 mph and reached a top speed of 131 mph while flying above the track in a helicopter. While the GT-R/C was obviously highly modified, the DualShock 4 controller was completely unmodified.

The wireless controller works from up to a kilometer (0.62 miles). Naturally, that’s a pretty big risk when it comes to radio frequencies, which is why two independent safety systems are in place to cut the engine and apply full ABS braking in case there’s any loss of control. Like we said, it’s an expensive piece of machinery.

Aside from promoting the new Gran Turismo video game, the GT-R/C will be toured around UK schools to help promote STEM subjects in young students. Which isn’t to say the controller will be handed over.
