Thanks to advances in safety technology, more especially the headlight technology, two of Nissan’s sedan models have received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s top pick award. Keep reading to learn more about these awards and which vehicles were chosen.
The winners
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) chose the 2021 Nissan Altima for its 2020 TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) rating and the 2021 Nissan Sentra for the 2020 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) rating. According to the IIHS, almost half of all deadly crashes happen in the dark with more than one quarter on unlit roads. Because of this statistic, there is a huge priority on headlight capability. This is not the first year the Altima has received recognition for its safety. In fact, the Altima has received the IIHS TSP or TSP+ award each year since 2013.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 features
Designed with six active safety technologies, the Nissan Safety Shield 360 comes as standard equipment on 10 Nissan models. The Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection has a forward-facing radar and camera technology to help alert if there are vehicles or crossing pedestrians. The Bling Spot Warning detects vehicles in the driver’s blind spot. The Rear Automatic Braking feature detects motionless objects when the vehicle is backing up and may apply brakes when necessary. Other features in this safety system include Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
