Recently, Nissan released their exciting new 2018 LEAF electric vehicle. With so much fan and critical acclaim since its announcement, the LEAF continued to be one of the most popular electric models available today. However, while seen as a fairly new technology, Nissan has been working on EV technology for more than 70 years. So what was the first electric Nissan vehicle?
What is the Nissan Tama?
In the post-World War II era of Japan, one of the biggest hits to the country was shortages of oil and gasoline. This lead automobile manufacturers to try to find alternative energy sources in order to compensate and power their vehicles. Back in 1947, the Tachikawa Aircraft Company, later known as the Prince Motor Company who was then acquired by Nissan, set out to create an electrically powered vehicle.

What they were able to design was a prototype 2-seater truck named the Tama. This truck had a 500kg load capacity, as well as a top speed of 34km/h with its 4.5-horsepower motor. Later they were able to create a 2-door passenger car with room for four passengers, which improved its top speed to 35km/h and offered a cruising range of 65km on a single charge.
