Is Nissan releasing a new Xterra?
By Product Expert | Posted in FAQs, Nissan Xterra on Thursday, January 4th, 2018 at 5:29 pmWhen will Nissan bring back the Xterra off-road SUV?
It was just over two years ago that we made a sad announcement: The Nissan Xterra was discontinued after the 2015 model year. Between the Pathfinder, Rogue and Murano, it’s not that Nissan doesn’t have plenty of great SUVs on the market, but none that are made for off-roading. Lately, the rumor mill has been churning about a possible re-release of the Xterra. When will Nissan bring back their coveted off-road SUV? There doesn’t seem to be confirmation at this time.
Why are there rumors of an Xterra return?
With the Xterra only just discontinued, you might be wondering why there are even suspicions that it might return. After all, it was discontinued for a reason, right?
There are a few key insights to consider. First, the Jeep Wrangler is due for a complete redesign for this upcoming model year, with a new Ford Bronco coming for 2020. Clearly, the competition is thinking in terms of off-road vehicles meant for more active lifestyles. It’s not all about the family vehicle anymore.

It isn’t just the hint that other brands are looking into rugged options that has consumers and auto journalists predicting an Xterra return. Motor Authority reported spy shots of an SUV that’s based on the Navara pickup truck, though it’s a release for the Chinese market. It’s also a seven-seat SUV option so it would be closer in size to the Pathfinder if it did make its way to the U.S.
If Nissan does bring back the Xterra, or something to replace it, it seems unlikely this will happen anytime soon. The Terra, as the model headed for China is called, will debut at the Beijing Auto Show in late April. It’s unlikely that we’ll know too much more about a possible release here in America, but it will hint at the sort of design ideas and future technology that’s on the minds of Nissan engineers.
Once we learn more, we’ll be updating here at the Glendale Nissan Blog, so stay tuned.
