Automatic braking will be a new standard for Nissan in 2018

Driver distraction remains at an all-time high, and is the primary culprit behind devastating accidents. In a busy world, it’s not as easy as it used to be to stay focused while rolling along at high speeds in a two-ton machine. Which is a scary thought for most of us when we consider what other drivers might be doing behind the wheel. One feature that combats our tendency toward inattentiveness is automatic emergency braking, which provides audible and visual alerts when a frontal collision seems likely. If a driver doesn’t press the brakes, your car will do it for you, preventing a collision or mitigating damage. For 2018, this feature will be standard for many 2018 Nissan models. But which ones?

Many Nissan models already offer automatic emergency braking as part of the Nissan Intelligent Safety Shield Technologies, but this is frequently part of higher trim levels. With so many shoppers opting for the starting trim, it only makes sense that safety should be one of the first features offered, rather than making it a premium. By making the feature standard in many models, Nissan will be introducing one million new cars with this extra line of safety. So which models have it?

All Nismo and manual-equipped models will be exempt, simply because the feature is not compatible at this time. You’ll note that the models included are among the most popular in the Nissan lineup, so it’s expected to be quite an improvement across the board.
Automatic emergency braking, which was formerly known as forward emergency braking, uses radars to monitor the space in front of your Nissan. When it senses an object is too close, it delivers warnings to alert drivers of the danger.
Current statistics show that one-third of crashes involve rear collisions, and systems like automatic emergency braking reduce injuries by as much as 35%.
