I think we can all agree that here in Chicagoland it’s been a pretty pleasant winter thus far. Unfortunately, we also know that can only last so long. Luckily, that gives us all some extra time to get our car ready for winter. It’s probably no secret that the cold and snow can really wreak havoc on your car if you’re not ready for the long winter season. Since it’s still a relatively mild weather-wise, here at Glendale Nissan we recommend taking care of your car’s maintenance while we still have some time before the bitter cold sets in. Below we’ve listed some winter car care tips that will help you make sure your Nissan is in great shape to handle the low temperatures and rough weather.

- Take Care of Your Battery – Cold weather can be hard on a battery, causing it to be far less effective than it would be in warm weather. Have the battery tested and if it’s in bad shape it’s a good idea to replace it.
- Wiper Blades are Essential – Winter weather tends to hit wiper blades especially hard, with snow and ice causing more wear and tear that simple rain. Check your wiper blades every so often and replace them when they’re worn out.
- Keep an Eye on Your Tires – Tires can wear out much more easily in the winter. The change in temperature can cause change in tire pressure, meaning cars often ride on deflated wheels. Check your tire pressure often and inflate your tires as needed.
- Consider Winter Tires – Winter or snow tires are actually a great investment for you to make. Winter tires tend to be hardier and offer better traction on slick roads. Changing over to winter tires is actually rather easy, and it’s a really great way to prepare for winter weather.
- Check Your Car’s Fluids Often – It’s pretty obvious that fluids tend not to do all that well in the bitter cold. We recommend checking your vehicle’s fluids often and refilling them as needed, especially the oil. Also, make sure you keep up with regular oil changes.
- Remember Scheduled Maintenance – Speaking of oil changes, keeping up with regularly scheduled maintenance in general is incredibly important in the winter. Your owner’s manual can tell you what your car is due to have done and when.
- Keep the Right Tools In Your Car – It’s pretty imperative that you keep certain items with you in your car, like an ice scraper and jumper cables. It’s not a bad idea to go a step further and prepare an emergency kit with other helpful items like a cell phone charger and extra blanket.
We hope these tips help you and your car successfully make it through another Midwest winter. You can find more great information like this in the tips and tricks section of our blog.
